Photograph this.
You're ranking barefoot at the edge of the ocean. The air is major with salt, the air decorated in bruised purples and firelight from the dying sun. The dunes battle forward, curling and breaking at the feet, before sliding calmly back to the depths.
But this isn't just water pressing you.
Since every tide… holds memory.
Exactly the same tide that brushes against your legs tonight after swept around sides you'll never know. It hidden forgotten towns, cooled lava as it poured from newborn volcanoes, and drowned forests that existed before individuals ever imagined strolling upright. It carried the ashes of fires that burned out a thousand years ago. It has used the bones of sailors who vanished into the night, their voices swallowed by wind and water.
And now it touches you.
The hold requires items of the world with it everytime it retreats — grains of sand from mountains that dropped sometime ago, covers that when sheltered lives smaller than the usual fingernail, fragments of rock and glass used smooth from ages of tumbling. Wherever do they're going? To the areas we can't see. Into trenches deeper than Everest is tall, into dark canyons wherever mild never handled, in to currents that group the world like arteries.
The hold hides every thing it collects, burying the world's thoughts in a stop also vast for us to break.
We tell ourselves we understand it. We information their habits, build walls and harbors to struggle it, title the hours when it will increase and fall. Nevertheless the wave doesn't worry about our measurements. It never belonged to us. It concentrates and then the moon.
That pale ghost in the air, remote and untouchable, brings at the oceans every moment of each day. The water stretches toward it, climbing to meet up its unseen hand. And once the moon turns out, the water falls back. That quiet tug-of-war has designed the planet for billions of years. Also the deepest seas are connected to anything beyond themselves.
The tide is changing.
It's creeping further inland now. Glaciers are melting into its depths, heating waters are swelling their body, and shorelines are vanishing piece by piece. Islands we once thought eternal are actually gone, decreased to only titles on old maps.
And listed here is the facts many people do not need to manage: the wave will not end for us.
We contact it disaster. The tide calls it nothing at all. It simply remains, since it generally has, using and offering, sculpting and erasing. It has erased whole continents before. It is going to do therefore again.
Can you imagine the future?
The ocean sheets on the cities we built. Roads vanish underneath the waves, their asphalt broken and broken like old bone. Towers fail to the surf, turning in to reefs wherever fish drift through silent glass halls. Monuments fall, broken and dispersed till they're indistinguishable from the rocks of the seabed. Whole civilizations are reduced to pieces, overly enthusiastic by currents therefore powerful we could never swim against them.
And when it occurs, the wave won't roar. It won't rage. It will not mourn.
It only will remember.
Because that's what the wave does. It's the planet's memory. Every life, every storm, every loss is folded in to their depths and carried forward. The hold has watched whole sides increase and fall. It knows points no human language can ever hold.
However the hold is not only a thief. It is really a sculptor.
It produces life to the shore. It holds nutrients to estuaries and marshlands where new creatures are born. It designs the ends of our planet, smoothing sharp stones into soft stones, remaking beaches with every breath. Minus the tide, the planet's heartbeat might falter. Oceans could stagnate. Coastlines could wither.
Probably that's why we are interested in it.
We head to the water's side without always understanding why. Young ones chase the retreating dunes, joking, then shriek when it rushes straight back toward them. People stay at the shoreline for hours, hypnotized by the beat, making the noise of the lives slip away. There is anything endless in the tide's breath — something that calls to the part people that recalls wherever we came from.
Because we originated from the water once.
The tide carried living onto the land. It cradled the very first delicate creatures that dared to examine from the shallows. And probably this is exactly why we feel so small position before it now — perhaps not since it can take sets from people, but since in certain strong, unspoken Planet, we know it gave people everything first.
Stand there long enough, and you'll begin to notice the details. The quiet tug at your ankles as it draws away. The hiss of pockets collapsing in the foam. The light, nearly individual sigh as it exhales onto the sand.
If you listen closely, you might hear the hold letting you know a truth:
“Nothing you know is permanent. But nothing is truly missing, either.”
1 day, the hold can throw over the world like we were never here. The titles of our cities, the borders we struggled conflicts to safeguard, the monuments we developed to outlast time — the whole thing will be taken away, softened, and moved into the deep.
And yet… there is an odd ease in that.
Since the tide reminds us that people are part of anything bigger than ourselves. Something which does not need us, but keeps all of us the same. Everything we do, every thing we build, every air we get becomes element of its memory. The hold maintains it, actually whenever we are gone.
You'll never know all that it carries. Nothing people will.
But the next time you're at the beach, stop. Have the take at your feet. View the waves draw lines in the mud, then erase them without hesitation. Remember that the same tide touched lives you'll never match and will feel lives long following yours.
It does not subject in the event that you forget. The hold won't.
The tides will never reveal their secrets. But if you are quiet enough, you may sense them in your bones.
