find dirt roads on Google Maps How to Spot Dirt Roads on Google Maps Switch to Satellite View
Tap the layers icon (usually bottom right on mobile or lower-left corner on desktop).
Select “Satellite” mode.
Dirt roads often appear as narrow, light-colored tracks without lane markings.
Use Terrain or Topographic View
In the same layers menu, enable “Terrain” to get elevation and land detail.
This helps identify remote areas where dirt roads are more likely.
Zoom in on Rural or Forest Areas
Search national parks, desert zones, or farmland.
Unpaved roads will usually lack lane coloring and may be marked with dashed lines.
Check Road Names & Labels
Some dirt roads are labeled as “Forest Route,” “County Road,” or “Unpaved.”
Clicking on or tapping the road sometimes gives info like surface type.
?? Tip for Driving If you're planning a route, Google Maps won’t avoid dirt roads by default, but it also doesn't always warn you about them. For off-road or overland driving:
Consider using Google Earth, Gaia GPS, OnX Offroad, or AllTrails—apps that specialize in dirt and trail mapping.
Check Street View, if available, to preview the road surface.
Search user forums or off-roading communities for shared coordinates or routes.
