The tropical evergreen nutmeg tree, Myristica fragrans, yields mace or javitri as well as nutmeg spice. The nutmeg seed is protected by a crimson, lacy layer known as the mace. The fruit of the tree breaks apart to show the seed and aril when it reaches maturity. After harvesting, the fruit's aril is manually removed, flattened, and allowed to dry for ten to fourteen days outdoors. When the red aril is left intact, it becomes an amber, yellow, or orange-brown hue known as a "blade" of mace. The blades may be crushed into a spice or sold just as is.

In addition to being indigenous to Indonesia, mace is also found in various Caribbean nations, most notably Grenada, where nutmeg is the national emblem and can be seen on the flag.
